Helping Veterans heal through the arts

The Bronx Veterans Affairs hospital recently unveiled a program with volunteers teaching veterans to play an instrument. The hospital’s staff finds that for many veterans playing an instrument calms “demons that have haunted them since their time in combat overseas. We thought this program was interesting, since two of the five soldiers featured in Hidden Battles processed their wartime trauma through art: Saar, a former Special Officer in the Israeli Army incorporated his war experience in his choreography, and George, a Vietnam vet, helps younger veterans from Afghanistan and Iraq express themselves through drawing and painting.
